Programming-An Introduction.

Programming-An Introduction.

So you want to be a programmer, eh? I assume the answer to be yes. Else, you won't be here reading my article. That does not mean that my articles are only for programmers. Any individual with normal IQ and a little bit of common sense can grasp the gist of this article and the rest to follow. So why ask the question in the first place? That's because the commitment level differs according to the answer to the question. If you answer yes, I warn you that you have a tough journey ahead and to immerge successfully, you require a lot of effort and above all, serious commitment. If you are a casual browser, then it depends upon the degree of your causality.

Now once you have decided to be a programmer, you are faced with one of the most daunting task even before you begin programming. And this will affect your entire career as a programmer. And that is which programming language to go for. It is not difficult to find individuals saying "I know all programming languages. C, C++, JAVA, FORTRAN, etc.". Take it from me that in 90% cases, these individuals are good for nothing. As an ancient English proverb goes "Jack of all trades, Master of None". Today the computer industry does not require these type of people. I admit there was an era where modular organisations were not common. Hierarchy was not properly defined and the work load was not properly distributed. This was the condition of the IT industry about 6-7 years ago. There you required person who had conceptual knowledge of everything and working knowledge of few. But as everyone will agree, those days are a thing of past. Today organisations are well-defined and and workload is properly distributed. So one is expected to be a master of his field rather than a jack of many.

I feel I have explained to you clearly why specialisation in any one programming language is imperative. But that does not mean that you start your first stint as a programmer with JAVA. Here your common sense plays a very important part. Computer educationalist suggest that every programmer must start with a sound knowledge of programming rather than a language in particular. You must be conversant with algorithms and flowcharts as they are the lifeline of any computer program. Then it is advisable that you start with a simple yet powerful language. The first thing that comes to mind is C. Why C, you may ask. And hey you are writing on Visual basic, if not mistaken. C
