Vacations Are Just Breaks

Vacations are times when we take a break from what we are used to doing each day. Often, that break is for a week or two. During this time, we don't do some of the things we do everyday. Some vacations are spent hundreds of miles away from home. Some are spent where we live.

Vacations are fun when we get to go somewhere that we have never been before. We get to enjoy new sights and sounds and people. Sometimes we also get to taste new foods. These new experiences are things we store away in our memories to remember later. If we also bring back a souvenir from each vacation, we have an item that helps us even more to remember the things we saw and did.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ON A VACATION?

Well, you can do so many things that I wouldn't be able to list them all here.

If you went to the beach, you could go swimming or make sand castles. If you went to the mountains, you could go hiking or have a campfire and tell stories. If you went to a city, you could shop in different stores or visit a zoo or museum.

But did you know that you don't have to travel to have a vacation? You can have one anytime right at home. How? Simply take a break from your everyday routine and explore your surroundings.

Vacations give us new sights.

  1. Get a pencil. Get a piece of paper for each room in your house. If there are 6 rooms, get 6 pieces of paper. If there are 8 rooms, get 8 pieces of paper.
  2. Go to the middle of the first room and sit down on the floor.
  3. From memory, draw what another room in your house looks like. If you're in the living room, draw the kitchen. Imagine where everything is placed and draw it.
  4. When you're done, go to another room. Sit on the floor in the middle of it and draw another room. If you're in the kitchen, draw the bathroom.
  5. Do this until each room has been drawn. Then, go back to each room and look at it. Did you leave out anything in your drawing of it? Are there things in the room that you don't remember seeing before?

    Vacations give us new sounds.

If the weather is good, go outside and sit on the porch or in a chair. Close your eyes. Be very quiet and pay attention to EVERY SOUND. Do you know what each sound is? Do you know what or who is making each sound? I bet you didn't know it was so noisy where you live! Or so quiet!
