The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language says that, a flag, as used in this article, is as follows: "A piece of cloth, usually rectangular, of distinctive color and design, used as a symbol, standard, signal, or emblem." Flags are used as a way of identifying something, for example; a country, or a state, or a brownie pack, or a chain store. They give us a sense of belonging - for example if you see as an American, if you see the Stars and Stripes flying in the gold medal position at the Olympic Games, you are part of that moment because that's your flag being raised. Can you identify your country's flag? Have a look at this website if you don't know what the flag of your country looks like: http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/flags... ACTIVITY ONE How many different flags can you see as you go around the shopping mall, or walk to school? Make a list of all the ones you know. ACTIVITY TWO When you see your country's flag displayed, perhaps on television at a sporting event, or in parade, how does it make you feel? If you belong to a team, or organisation (such as scouts) which has a flag, how do you feel when you see that flag? Write it down. If you've never thought about it before, look for your national flag displayed somewhere and then write down what you think about it. ACTIVITY THREE Go to the following website: http://www.lil-fingers.com/coloring/flag... Print out the page. Colour the flags in the correct colours. If you don't know what the colours should be, click on the link below any flag you are unsure of and you'll see what colours to use. ACTIVITY FOUR At the same website http://www.lil-fingers.com/coloring/flag... Double click on the flag of your own country, print this out and colour it in, then cut it out and put it on your pinboard or wall so that you remember what it looks like. ACTIVITY FIVE Quiz - click here for a puzzle sheet to print ACTIVITY SIX Make a memory game to play by yourself, or with a friend (or two) 1. Visit http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/flags... 2. Choose 10 different countries 3. Using index cards, or 10 identical pieces of paper, draw a line down the centre. 4. On one half of each piece of paper, draw and colour a flag. (See figure 1 here) 5. On the other half, write the name of the country. 6. Cut up the centre line (See figure 2 here) To play the game 1. Turn the cards face down so that the flags and countries are unseen.
