Learning IS Fun – An Introduction

Jun 8, 2003 - © Katie Anne Gustafsson

In the movie "Mary Poppins" Julie Andrews sang

"In every job that must be done,
there is an element of fun,
Find the fun and SNAP
The jobs a game"

The same can be said about learning. We learn best when we are interested in the subject we are studying. How many pre-teens can relate chapter and verse of the personal likes and dislikes of their current favourite international pop hero, and yet be unable to name past presidents and monarchs of their own country. The difference is that they are motivated to learn about the pop star - and the information is found in attractive glossy photo-filled magazines directed exclusively at them, and not in large bound text books high on words and low on colour illustrations.

Here at Learning is Fun the focus is on the kids. There wont be any long articles full of facts and figures. There wont be long words (unless they are necessary to the topic in which case the meanings of these words will be given). Instead there will be a short paragraph giving any necessary facts to complete the activities, and then a mixture of activities to allow visitors to learn about the subject in a relaxed and fun way.

Each month a new topic will be discussed. Activities will vary, depending on the topic. The kinds of activity you can expect to find here are: art/craft, recipes, quizzes, puzzles, interactive web games, printable sheets to use. The topic will follow the same format each month:

*Introductory Facts

*Activities

*Web links to related fun sites

*Short book reviews/suggestions of any fun books I've seen that might interest a young visitor who is curious to learn more about the subject. These ought to be available through your local library - it's always a good thing to make friends with the librarian at your school or in your town/city.

Although the audience of this site is children between the ages of 6-11, educators are also welcome. However, I would ask that you respect my copyright on the activities. Should you find anything that you would like to use in your own class, please put a link to the site on the sheets you distribute to your class. Home schooling parents, please let me know if there are any topics you'd like to see covered here. There wont be any lesson plans here, but perhaps the activities or weblinks will help to illustrate the points you are teaching your children.
