Keep A Goin

My sister had a birthday this weekend and one of her gifts was a book of poetry. She found a poem in there that I used to read all the time, in a goofy tongue in cheek kind of way, to emphasize my outlook on life. I like to think of myself as an optimistic person.

I first ran across the poem a few years ago, and instantly liked it because it reminded me of another one I had read in High School during poetry week. My sister handed me the book last night and I read this poem to the family, again in a silly voice, but it wasn't until today that I really started thinking about it and felt I had to share it with all of you.

"Keep A Goin'" was written in 1920 by a guy named Frank Stanton. It's an upbeat rhyming poem that reminds you everyone is going to have something happen to them, but we should all just get over it and keep going on. It sounds simple and the poem itself is simple, but anyone who has had to overcome some hurdles in their life understands that getting over them and moving on is not as easy as it sounds. We all tend to get engrossed in our problems, however big or small they are and forget that in time they REALLY will pass.

Before I say anything else, I think the most important thing you could do right now is read the poem. Please visit http://www.mohicanpress.com/wwwboard/mes... and read it.

Now, assuming you've read the poem, we can continue. It's a fun little nugget to know about. Why? Because if you went up to your neighbor right now and asked them about Frank Stanton would they have any idea who you were talking about? Probably not. The poem is not unknown, however. The very book I read it in was "101 Famous Poems" by Roy J. Cook. I typed the title into Google.com just for laughs to see what would come up and I was delighted to see several pages of websites who have mentioned it. Why it was mentioned was even more interesting. One website noted that an old woman had memorized it 90 years earlier and it was her life motto. A few religious sites mentioned in references to sermons and outlooks on life. Other websites simply remarked what a good attitude it represented. Many individuals, like myself, simply wanted to adopt the positive "Keep A Goin'" ideology.
