Religion and Street Style

By Melissa Rodríguez

You don't normally picture a rosary when you think of hip-hop style, but a Nashville designer is fusing Latin fashion with divine inspiration. Christy Velez of FlyChica Productions sells "nameplate rosaries and you can get one through her web site at http://fly.to/flychica.

Velez's pieces use the same number of beads found in traditional Roman Catholic rosaries, but her beaded creations of plastic and wood come with a twist. Velez customizes her pieces with customers' names and slogans such as "Mi Vida Loca". She started making her necklaces with the Sacred Heart of Jesus dangling from tiny foam frames. One day, someone suggested she make a rosary. Sacrilegious? Maybe not. Seventy five percent of her rosary customers have religious faith. And as a general rule, she won't put anything offensive on them.
