Junkyard Wars

As I sit here writing this, I'm taking a break from a huge cleaning surge that possessed my body earlier this morning. I've been cleaning out closets, re-arranging bedrooms and even painting. I've even made a few trips to the garage to put things into storage and yes, to introduce a few items to the dumpster.

My only dilemma now is hiding the evidence from my husband. What's he going to do when he finds out that I threw out his ten-year-old faded, torn and stained Lumber, Inc. hat that he hasn't worn in five years away? Will he notice the box of old boots at the bottom of the dumpster, or did I hide them well enough with today's trash?

I love my husband dearly and we have a great relationship. We've weathered all of the predictable storms of marriage such as handling money, political differences, in-laws and having kids. But the one thing no one ever warned me about is one that could be the cause of World War III in our home: He is a pack-rat and I am not.

Now I consider myself a frugal person. My youngest daughter, who is two, wore the same infant sleepers that belonged to my oldest son seven years ago. I've saved all of their nicest clothes and even their Sunday shoes for the next child in line. But I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would save their gym shorts from their freshman year.

I realize that some of my husband's stuff has a certain amount of sentimental value, but let's be realistic. If he and I both saved everything with the tiniest bit of nostalgia, our small three bedroom house would be bulging at the seams. Some things just have to go.

It's a new year and that means out with the old, in with the new. Now if I can only figure out how to hide my husband's old, torn briefcase until the next trash pick-up day...
