Mom, Where Do Babies Come From?

My sister-in-law loves a television show, "A Baby Story", that comes on every day on The Learning Channel. Each show tells the story of a woman's pregnancy and childbirth, leaving no detail uncovered (literally). I'll have to admit it is a good show that reminds me of the joy of bringing a new life into this world. But I'm going to have to disagree with one aspect of her viewing. She doesn't mind watching it with her children.

I know, I know, to each his own right? Afterall, giving birth is a very natural process and there's nothing to be ashamed of. The beauty and wonder of it all is amazing and children shouldn't be told to cover their eyes. At least that's her opinion. I, on the other hand, fumble to flip the channel when there's even mention of the word "pregnant."

When explaining this to my husband I could not pin point one certain reason why I would not want my young child watching a woman give birth. After all, I've been pregnant four times. My oldest is quite familiar with pregnancy.

My husband didn't need explanations because he agrees with me 100%. He and I participated in a Lamaze class when I was pregnant with my first child. The video we watched of a woman giving birth about deprived my husbund the opportunity of witnessing the birth of his first child. If given a choice, he would've hit the waiting room the moment I was wheeled out of the labor room and into the delivery room. Needless to say, he didn't regret participating in our son's birth.

Maybe it's the fact that viewing this type of program would spark the conversation about where babies come from. My oldest is at the ripe age of eight, and is old enough to know that babies aren't delivered by the stork. When I was pregnant last year with my fourth child, I feared the question more and more as I started to show. After being pregnant three times previosly, I was prepared for anything except the dreaded question "Mom, how did the baby get there?"

For some reason my children did not seem interested in that. Their main concern was how the baby was going to get out. My eldest had some idea because he had seen a giraffe give birth on the discovery channel. That was good enough for me-I wasn't going to go into any more details. The other two were satisfied with the reply that when it was time, I would go to the hospital and the doctor would take it out.
