This article concludes a three-part series on rosemary.
When it comes time to choose a rosemary plant, there are many kinds available, including the following.
Alba rosemary is one of the more unusual kinds. Rather than the usual blue, its flowers are white. Arp rosemary is reportedly one of the hardiest of the upright kinds, which explains why it is known as hardy rosemary. This reaches about two to four feet in height. Its leaves are light gray-green. Benenden Blue rosemary is only about 2½ feet tall and 1½ feet across. This had richly colored blue flowers, and cascading, tightly packed stems. This can tolerate temperatures to around 20 degrees Fahrenheit. It reportedly was found by plant explorer Collingwood "Cherry" Ingram on Corsica. Blue Boy rosemary is smaller than some, only reaching about four feet. Considered slightly more tender than some, it grows beset where the temperatures are 15 degrees Fahrenheit or above. This is characterized by its bushy, slightly twisted branches. Blue Gem rosemary grows to about three feet in height. It features glossy foliage and sky blue blossoms. Constance DeBaggio rosemary is only two feet tall. This bushy plant tends to be vigorous. Its leaves are dark green, and the blossoms are medium blue. Creeping rosemary is more tender than some, and recommended for zones 9 southward. This low, mounding plant is about a foot in height and several feet across. It is often used for hanging baskets and other containers. Fota Blue rosemary is best known for its semi- prostrate growth habit. Only about 1½ feet in height, it can easily spread to three feet. Recommended for zones 9 and warmer, this is a somewhat tender plant. It has very deep blue blossoms. Gilded rosemary usually reaches about five feet in height with an equal spread. This features lilac-blue blossoms and some golden variegation the foliage. Golden rosemary has variegated leaves with flecks of gold. Green Rain rosemary has been on the market for five years or so. This has dark green foliage. Reaching about three or four feet in height, this plant is distinguished by the lower branches that tend to droop somewhat as it gets older. Herb Cottage rosemary is typically two to three feet tall. This compact, bushy plant has a fast growth rate. Its blossoms are bright blue. Huntington Carpet rosemary is a particularly beautiful prostrate plant. This originated in the Huntington Gardens, and has lovely purple blossoms. Very suitable as a ground cover and as a rock garden plant, this eventually grows to about two feet tall. Go To Page: 1 2
