Arm Chair Shopping for Gardeners

A stack of mail-order catalogs is all it takes to keep gardeners happy during the dark of winter. We can spend hours and even days compiling our spring orders. When it comes to buying herbs and herb seeds for the garden, here are some of my favorite sources.

Well-Sweep Herb Farm has been in business for over thirty-five years. Their catalogs have long been popular with mail-order shoppers. In addition, this herb farm in Port Murray, New Jersey is open to the public during the growing season. Visits are also possible during the winter months, but the owners request that you call to make an appointment. Each year, they schedule a number of classes and herb-related events, including herb festivals. Their mail-order catalog is so extensive that it is hard to beat. For example, there are several pages of lavenders.

J.L. Hudson issues its ethnobotanical catalog of seeds each year. It specializes in unusual varieties, and has been in business since 1911. It is a public access seed bank, and sells seeds of many heirloom plants. For each kind of seed, the catalog gives details on germination. The plants are listed alphabetically by Latin name. The catalog is easy to use, and provides a brief description and cultural requirements along with highlights on the history and use of each plant.

For those in the South, the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange is an excellent source. They sell certified organic seeds that are free of chemical treatment. They're committed too seed saving, and seek to preserve heirloom varieties. Like many others, they adhere to the Safe Seed Initiative, meaning they will never knowingly sell transgenic or genetically engineered seeds or plants. Southern Exposure seeds are sometimes available from retail stores. For 2005, they're offering three new kinds of garlic.

Nichols Garden Nursery specializes in herbs and items for the edible landscape. They've also joined the Safe Seed Initiative, and sells organic seeds. Nichols has been in business for over fifty years. The catalog offers herb plants and seeds as well as items that will be of interest to kitchen gardeners.

Territorial Seed Company is based in Oregon where it has a retail store. In addition, it has a mail-order catalog. Offering both organic and conventional seeds, they specialize in open pollinated varieties. They've joined the Safe Seed Initiative. Territorial has extensive organic trial gardens where it does its own research and breeding work. In addition to a wide assortment of herbs, fruits, and vegetables, it sells gardening supplies, particularly organic ones.
