Healing Herbs

Herbs are a mainstay in landscapes. Often these are planted in decorative herb gardens. But they can also be featured in other garden areas, including perennial beds and borders. Traditionally, a number of herbs have been used for healing.

Whether they were passed on through oral traditions or through recorded history, herbs have been an integral part of our culture. Some of the oldest records date from Egypt, India, and China.

Americans are increasingly embracing herbal medicine as an alternative or as an addition to their usual medical practices.

And as research focuses on testing and trialing herbs and herbal medicines through clinical trials and scientific studies, we are learning more about the power of herbs.

The good news about ginseng is that it is beneficial for some diabetics. Researchers concluded diabetics could expect modest benefits if they took 3 grams of ginseng powder 40 minutes before consuming foods containing glucose.

In 2004, studies found that cinnamon was also helpful for diabetics. This lowered glucose levels in the blood of laboratory mice, while a human trial found that it lowered glucose levels, cholesterol, and triglycerides when it was taken for 40 days. Another promising effect showed up in a trial with cinnamon. People were given various flavors of chewing gum while they took attention, and memory tests. The cinnamon gum improved their scores.

In light of the withdrawal of Vioxx from the market along with evidence that Celebrex can cause similar side effects when taken in large doses, those with arthritis may be scrambling for natural remedies. A study with ginger found that it relieved knee pain as well as aspirin. However, the people had to take it daily for three months to experience the full effect of the herb. In addition, ginger is one of those herbs that can interfere with blood clotting. Therefore, those on blood thinners wouldn't want to take ginger.

Apparently ginkgo extract slows the progress of dementia by acting as an antioxidant and helping the neurons. More studies are needed to be sure that it will help in actually preventing Alzheimer's. It apparently has little effect on healthy individuals.

Though ginkgo is generally considered very safe, it can interfere with blood clotting. It should not be used in combination with aspirin or blood-thinning drugs like warfarin. For that very reason, doctors are now warning patients to stop taking herbs several weeks before surgery because the herbs may result in complications.
