New Herbs for 2005

Lavender 'Spanish Eyes' is only one of the wonderful new lavenders for 2005. This one is recommended as an annual. Blooming in about ten to twelve weeks from the time the seeds are planted, these are wonderful for mass plantings, cutting gardens, and herb gardens. 'Spanish Eyes' is extremely heat tolerant. It reaches 1½ to 2 feet in height. The wonderfully fragrant flower spikes throughout the summer.

Satureja 'Supermint Pink Sensation' is a tender plant that will only be winter hardy in zones 9-11. This fragrant herb reaches nearly 1½ feet in height, and sports extremely aromatic vivid pink blossoms. Appearing from spring through the fall months, these contrast beautifully with the dark green foliage. This hybrid prefers full sun.

Plectranthus 'Silver Shield' is being introduced for 2005. This plant is noted for its oversized silvery gray foliage. Reaching about two feet in height, it has an equal spread. 'Silver Shield' is recommended for sunny landscapes. Extremely tolerant of stress, this herb is especially suitable for mixed planters because it won't overcrowd other plants.

Johnny's Selected Seeds is introducing Perilla 'Britton Shisho.' This herb has delightful, eye-catching foliage that is red on the undersides. It has a mild aroma reminiscent of mint or basil. Recommended as a bedding plant and for mass plantings, it is also suitable for containers and the edible landscape. While the young, tender foliage can be added to salads, larger ones are recommended as sushi wraps.

For 2005, Renee's Garden Seeds has added several exciting herbs to its lineup. Arugula 'Runway' is an outstanding new selection. It performed very well in garden trials. This is noted for its attractive, deeply lobed, oak-like foliage.

For that feline in your life, you'll definitely want to try 'Mixed Greens Gourmet Cat Treats.' Exclusive to Renee's, this blend of different organic tidbits will have special appeal to cats. The seed package contains enough seeds for several plantings. Renee's seeds are available from retail and mail-order sites as well as at their website.
