Garden Books as Holiday Gifts

Those friends and family members on your gift list are sure to love books. Whatever their interests may be, there is a perfect book.

That mushroom lover will be delighted with "Morel Tales-the Culture of Mushrooming" by Gary Alan Fine from the University of Illinois Press. This landmark title represents an emerging genre-environmental sociology-in which the author uncovers the connections between wild mushroom gatherers, nature, and the world at large.

For water gardeners, Tetra Press has just the thing. "How to Build Ponds and Waterfalls and Much More-the Complete Guide" by Jeffrey Reid has color-illustrated, no-nonsense instructions on these garden features. Reid walks the builder through every step in the process-from site selection to seasonal care. With over 1000 ponds and waterfalls to his credit, Reid is recognized by the National Pond Society as a Master of Ponds.

Those with ponds need "The Pond Owner's Problem Solver" by John Dawes from Tetra. This comprehensive title features expert details on designing, building, planting, stocking, and taking care of ponds with complete descriptions for various plants and fish. Each section includes the most frequently asked questions by pond owners.

For wintertime reading, gardeners need books that sparkle with interest. "Legends in the Garden-Who in the World is Nellie Stevens?" by Linda L. Copeland and Allan M. Armitage is from Green Leaves Press. It is so enjoyable that I guarantee you'll want an extra copy for yourself. It reveals the personalities behind those plant names we so often hear. The 45 profiles feature legendary individuals, such as Luther Burbank, along with contemporary figures like Carol Mackie. For each one, there's a photo and biography with all the fascinating details on how he/she came to breed/find the plant in question.

Book lovers will treasure "Great Natural History Books and Their Creators" by Ray Desmond, a joint publication between the British Library and Oak Knoll Press. This remarkable volume features over 115 historical plates, half in color, reproduced from pages at the British Library. This engrossing book takes readers behind the scenes with details on how these rare books came about. A number of rare titles as well as ones that were never completed are represented here. The author is an expert on the history of natural history, and has 20 books to his credit.

Indoor gardeners will be delighted with "Pictorial Guide to House Plants" by M. Jane Coleman Helmer et al. Beautifully illustrated with over 500 color photos, it provides all the information one needs to grow indoor plants successfully with details on plant care, cultural needs, seasonal tips, plant problems, and propagation. The plant encyclopedia features over 340 plant species and nearly 600 cultivars. For each plant, there is a color photo and complete description along with tips for routine care.
