"The Herbal Almanac" by Linda Ours Rago from Starwood Publishing, Inc. is a book that herb lovers can enjoy and read each day of the year. It is a book of days that is just packed with fascinating herbal folklore. The almanac is beautifully illustrated with full-color botanical art by Marjorie Stodgell. This title is wonderfully written in an engaging style, and features highlights of herbal history from the ancients to the present. The entry for Feb. 29 suggests herbs to use as personal protection for this unlucky day.

From Ryland Peters & Small comes "Gardening with Herbs" by George Carter. This is a delightful workbook featuring color-illustrated, step-by-step projects with foldout pages. Whatever your situation, this book is sure to have helpful ideas. The projects are arranged into broad categories, such as formal and informal herb gardens, and kitchen herb gardens. Among the projects are herb topiaries, purple beds, herb drying racks, and kitchen herb half-barrel container gardens. Each project features a list of materials and equipment needed along with tips on care and maintenance. For each garden design, there is a planting sketch and color drawing of the completed garden.

Two of the books I've been reading deal with the use of herbs. "Aromatiques'-a Sensualist's Guide to Aromatic Oils" by Eva-Marie Lind from SOMA is beautifully conceived. This title will guide readers through the proper selection and use of aromatic oils. Among these is everything from facials and massages to fragrant baths. The author's aim is to give herb lovers an introduction to aromatherapy, but she certainly accomplishes much more than that. She begins with the essentials of oils, their physical and psychological effects, and proceeds with instructions on how to choose, blend, and use them. There are complete profiles of the nineteen most popular aromatic plants.

"Homeopathy A-Z" by Dana Ullman was published by Hay House. This comprehensive book is very easy to use. The illnesses and conditions are listed alphabetically with complete details on the herbs or recommended remedies. Those new to homeopathy may want to read the informative introduction. The appendix features lots of helpful details on the different homeopathic organizations, sources of the remedies, and sources of informationon homeopathy. This title features gorgeous color drawings.
