Anyone growing plants from seeds needs "The Seed Program" from CyberNiche. Seed is very expensive these days, and your degree of success will be much greater with it. It allowed me to organize my seeds, note their packing date, germination rate, and created a planting schedule for my hardiness zone. It updates the files when the calendar year changes, so you can record current information as needed. The comprehensive database provides information on each plant.

"Horticopia Expert Notes Pests and Diseases for Herbaceous Perennials" by Stanton Gill et al is available from Horticopia. Once you install the Acrobat Reader, you can see color photos, and read about each plant problem. The pests include insects, mites, invertebrates, deer, moles, and environmental factors. There are special sections on beneficial organisms, and low-risk pesticides. You can browse by plant or pest. Gardeners of all levels will find this program to be very useful indeed. I like the fact that it doesn't have to be installed, so it saves space on my hard drive.

The "Gardener's Journal" from Marco Software is extremely easy to use, and so helpful. I'll never need to buy another garden journal. If I move, I can enter my new garden's name, and create new files. With this program, I can make entries at my convenience. I can compile a list of garden chores that need done, and then erase it when they're completed. I can keep an up-to-date list of plants, seeds, gardening contacts, and sources. The program has an extensive search feature. If you choose to do so, you can join the Garden Journal user group on the web.

Bird watching and gardening are complementary activities. For that reason, I highly recommend "Sam's Guide to Enjoying Backyard Birds". This one-of-a-kind program features video clips, pictures, songs, and much more for the maximum bird viewing experience. This runs from the CD-ROM, so it doesn't take space on your disk drive. If you've thought about creating a bird garden, this title has all the details you need to succeed. It has information on feeders, birdbaths, and birdfeed for each species. There are also tips on bird photography and selecting binoculars. I was impressed by the database, which has complete profiles of each species, including details on nesting habits. Users will love the bird songs and 35 video clips. Despite the title, this program has extensive information on other wildlife, including bats and butterflies.
