FALL INTO A NEW SEASON

Autumn is a time for great beginnings. Give the new gardening season a warm welcome. Now that the heat of summer is past, the weather is just perfect for working outside. This is the perfect time to spruce up the garden and give it a fresh look for fall.

A great place to start is those container plantings. Create some new ones using herbs, or rejuvenate existing container gardens. Chances are, those old container plants are leggy and overgrown. Either cut them back to rejuvenate them, or pull them out and replace them with some herbs.

For a winning combination, combine basil, parsley, and thyme with 'Tri-Color' sage and some pansies. The foliage of the herbs supplies a lovely background for viewing the flowers.

Fall is a whole new gardening season. To simplify the gardener's life, there is a complete line of cold-tolerant plants suitable for fall planting, called Fall Magic. This brand includes herbs, and perennials with colorful foliage and/or autumn blooms.

The Fall Magic brand features a number of herbs with intriguing foliage. These should be available at local garden centers. You can learn more by visiting their wholesale website. If you live in an area where the first frost arrives early, don't be concerned. You can rely on cold-tolerant Fall Magic plants to bring color in the fall and early winter months.

Among the Fall Magic collection are some very fine herbs. My favorites are 'Icicles' helichrysum, with elongated, slender, needle-like blue-green foliage. The other Fall Magic herbs include lavender cotton, 'Catlin's Giant' ajuga, and three wonderful richly hued sages-'Tricolor,' and 'Icterina.'

In addition to herbs, the Fall Magic group includes perennials with colorful foliage. Among these are the variegated sweet flags, such as golden variegated sweet flag and dwarf white striped sweet flag. These dwarf ornamental grasses are just perfect for pot culture.

Of the Fall Magic flowering perennials, I've found 'Autumn Glory' bergenia to be just wonderful. This lovely plant blooms twice a year-once in early spring and again in the autumn. Once the cool fall temperatures arrive, its foliage becomes deep maroon. Other great perennials in the Fall Magic series are purple-leaved spurge, and 'Matrona' sedum with bronze fall foliage.

Gardeners in cold climates need frost-proof containers for these fall container plantings. Ordinary terra cotta and most plastic pots aren't weatherproof. You can treat clay pots with the proper material, or replace them with ones that are impervious to freezing. In addition, some other kinds of synthetic pots will not crack and break. Just read the label before buying so you know whether it can withstand cold temperatures.
