Create the garden of your dream with flowering herbs. Use them for beautiful flowerbeds and borders. By choosing carefully, you'll have blooms from spring through frost.

During the spring I rely on herbs to provide early color. The edges of my shady flowerbeds are carpeted with the delicate white blooms of sweet woodruff. About the same time the pulmonarias join in with their intriguing blue and pink blossoms.

The foliage of bugleweed brings year-round interest to my garden. In late spring its gorgeous purple flower spikes add brilliant color to the landscape.

Somewhat later the tall flowering stalks of the valerian appear with their clusters of white blooms.

By the time summer officially arrives the pinkish-lavender chive blossoms will begin to open. In addition to the ordinary chives, there are numerous other cultivars noted for their spectacular blooms. Look for these at garden centers and online.

Garden sage can be just spectacular. Though they don't last very long, these flowers are certainly welcome in late spring and early summer. The blooms occur on long spikes, and are often used as a cut flower. Some of the other sages we grow as herbs tend to bloom in the fall. These would include pineapple sage and Mexican sage.

Most flowering herbs are at their peak during the summer season. Yarrow has long been a favorite among perennial gardeners, and it is easy to see why. The blooms can last for months, and can even be used for everlastings.

Anise hyssop is a heat-loving herb. Mine don't emerge until warm weather arrives, but they quickly make up for lost time. They're available in a wide range of colors, such as pink, purple, and even white. I just love to work around the plants because of their delightful fragrance.

Beebalms are desirable plants for perennial gardens. The fluffy blooms last for a long period. These undemanding plants are well-liked nectar source for hummingbirds and butterflies. With so many nice mildew-resistant cultivars available, you needn't worry about disease problems. Beebalms bloom throughout the summer.

From mid-summer to frost depend upon the purple coneflower for flower power. These species are easy to grow from seed. Many named cultivars are available, including white-flowering ones.

Every fall I look forward to seeing joe-pye-weed in bloom. This is a favorite nectar plant for various species of butterflies. Because these plants are so tall, I plant them at the back of my flower borders. There are some improved cultivars available now.
