In addition to bringing about changes in labor laws, the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire also helped solidify support for unions such as the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union and the Womens' Trade Union League. Many workers within the garment industry were recent immigrants, struggling with a new language and a new culture, virtually at the mercy of their employers. If they spoke out against conditions in the workplace, they could lose their jobs.
After the Triangle Fire, more workers joined the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, and the union became bolder. It proposed an official day of mourning, and people gathered in churches, synagogues, and finally, in the streets. The union led a march of 100,000 workers to demonstrate to the legislature that they wanted action. The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire remains a turning point in United States history. Countless state and federal laws were enacted because of this incident. Unions gained numerous new workers who wanted someone to fight for their safety. Now employers have a clear set of guidelines that ensure the safety of their employees. Go To Page: 1 2
