In Part One of Your Labor & Delivery Glossary Of Terms, I went over some of the basic terminology that you may hear from your doctor during labor. However, there is even more terminology to familiarize yourself with!
Effacement: The thinning of the cervix. Electronic Fetal Monitor: A device that monitors a fetus's vital signs such as the fetal heartbeat as well as the mother's contractions. Engagement: When the fetus descends into the pelvic cavity. Epidural: Anesthesia administered into the epidural space at the base of the spine to numb the lower body. Episiotomy: An incision in the perineum to enlarge the vaginal opening. Placenta: A pancake-shaped organ that provides nutrients for the fetus. Uterus: The organ in which a baby grows. Vacuum Extraction: A vacuum suction cup that is attached to the baby's head. This gently pulls the baby down the birth canal. Vaginal Birth: The birth of a baby through the vaginal canal. While these certainly aren't all the terms you may hear in the labor and delivery room, it is a handful of what you will. Some of the terminology can get confusing, so be sure to ask if you have any questions about what something means. Go To Page: 1
