Labor & Delivery: Your Pain, Your Choices

© Jaime Warren

Labor and delivery is the last and most anticipated part of pregnancy. How you will manage the pain of labor is a personal choice, but one that should be considered carefully. Weigh your options, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages with your health care professional. The final choice is yours, and yours alone, so be sure to choose the option that you are the most comfortable with for you and your baby.

An option that many new mothers opt for is a natural, drug free childbirth. There are many different childbirth methods that can assist in managing the pain, without pain medication. A popular method is the Bradley Method which was introduced in 1970 by Dr. Robert A. Bradley. The method teaches mothers to use a "sleep-breathing" technique and adheres to the method of the father/partner participating in the birthing process.

Another option is Lamaze, which exercises the techniques of focal points, controlled breathing and massage techniques. The advantages of a natural childbirth are numerous. Mothers recover quickly, without having to let the side affects of medications wear off, and the babies are healthy and alert. The disadvantages depend on the level of pain that the mother can bear.

The second option is the use of pain medication during labor. One of the most popular medications is an epidural. With an epidural a small needle is placed in your back at waist level and pain medication is administered through the needle outside a sac that contains the spinal cord. With a Continuos Epidural a small plastic catheter is inserted through the needle and left in place after the needle is removed. Some of the disadvantages of the epidural are the losing the sensation to push, uncontrollable shivering, and a drop in blood pressure. Some of the advantages are laboring pain free, and quick administration of medication when needed.

While the use of narcotics is becoming increasingly unpopular, the option is still available should you choose to not receive the epidural. Two of the most frequently used medications are Demerol and Stadol. Unlike natural childbirth or an epidural, the use of narcotics can have quite an impact on your newborn. Babies born to mothers who use narcotics as pain relief have slower respiration, take longer to release their first cry, or will move sluggishly. The side affects for the mother range from nausea to constipation.

These are only a few of the options available for the laboring mother. There are many choices available where natural childbirth or pain medication is concerned. Consider the options carefully and choose the one that is the most practical for you.
