I was really excited when I found Kathi's blog, "The Yarn Mystic." Her subtitle is, "Where knitting is a spiritual and empowering process." I can find few ways better to express what knitting can do for you. It does expand your creativity, your knowledge, and empowers you as an artist, an individual, and as a unique being. No two hand knitting items are identical and that is part of the joy in the process and in the owning of such a garment.
Although Kathi's Blog is new, it is off to a good start. She is committed to it and she is honest and clear in her writing. She is excited about her triumphs and puzzled about the things she doesn't get: A student and a teacher. I chuckled at an entry today - the most frustrating knot in the middle of a skein of yarn. I could feel her irritation and puzzlement but I know as she works through this one she will learn something new. (Kathi - Here's a hint - it happens quite often in the novelty yarns. Nine times out of ten the knot will go to the back and not affect your work. Ignore it. If it does work to the front, cut the yarn, rip out to the beginning of the row and join the new end.)
But what won her this award was a particular entry. All of us knitters get carried away. It isn't a compulsion. It is love and devotion to a craft and to the ancient spirituality that evolves from us as we carefully craft each stitch. The rhythmic motion of the stitching is a meditation that perhaps only another knitter can relate to. And we want more of it. Everyone with stashed yarn in their house, raise their hands - don't worry - no one can see. I am betting on at least a 95% positive on that vote.
But this entry laid down some "rules" that make some sense. I suggest you read them and print them. Hang in on your wall - you can make it really pretty on a special printer paper and while you are at it, print a small copy and fold it around your credit card. Just six little rules and you will find less projects you ignore and more projects you complete.
