Summer Yarn Sales: Good Deals or Closet Insulators

Only a yarn fanatic, like myself, will understand those words. Closet insulation refers to large bags of yarn purchased for a project that will get done "someday," but in the meantime it serves the purpose of insulating the closet. Honestly, yarn lovers do not intend to buy closet insulators. At the time of the purchase, it was a good yarn with a good pattern in mind. It may have even had the quality that makes it a wonderful project: It was on sale. But now? We all have these bags of yarn and they usually represent a yarn sale we simply could not resist.

Summer yarn sales are everywhere right now. It is time to move the merchandise from the summer line to the fall and winter yarns. And therein is the problem: The yarn industry is looking further down the road than you are. Now it is time to learn how to see down that same road.

Lest this sounds like a completely foreign language, consider any fashion show that you may have seen. Whether it is in a high-end restaurant or it is just a short part of an "Oprah" show, there is a thread of consistency. Designers are presenting fashions in the colors that will be popular and trendy for the year ahead. In other words, the "hip" colors for Spring/Summer 2005 have already been determined. This isn't just a wild guess. These colors are carefully planned out. Yarn manufacturers know a hand knitted garment takes some time so they are easily a full year ahead of what is on the market. (As a side note, if you want to decorate your living room, check out yarn colors - they are the best prediction of the colors that will be timely.)

So a yarn sale is a true buyer beware. You may go into a yarn store and find a wonderful skein of yarn. It could be a lovely silk/cotton blend in an acceptable color to you. It could have been a skein that once sold for $15-20.00 each marked down to $3.00 a skein. For the basic colors of white, black or another standard, this is great - but of course, those aren't the skeins on sale. It is the colors that are on sale.

A sweater takes a long time to make. In the busy schedule of today's women (and men for that matter) the commitment to make a sweater or even a sleeveless shell is a big commitment. We just don't have enough time to spare. But what if that color is one that is so "last year's" that you don't ever want to wear it.
