Camisoles

Fabric camisoles are ever popular from "spaghetti straps" beachwear to pure silk business and evening styles. A knitted or crochet one will add something new to your wardrobe and you can have the pleasure of creating it yourself.

Selecting a stitch pattern that forms a wave or point edge will eliminate the need for a hem. Also if you use circular needles, there is no sewing up of side seams. Simply start from the lower edge, knitting continuously around in a seamless circle until you reach the length you want, then perhaps incorporate an eyelet round for ribbon, cast off and all you do to finish the camisole is attach the shoulder straps. These can be purchased ribbon, lace, pretty bias, cord or whatever you wish. Sew the straps down front and back, adjusting to fit, or tie the front ones only around your neck in a halter style. Another idea is to use a string of glass beads or small pearls. A different touch is to place three narrow ribbons side by side and sew to camisole at the base only.

If you commence the design from the top, you might try a light, lacey pattern and gradually increase on the way down. This gives an A-line style that is very comfortable, especially in fine cotton or cotton perle. To begin your camisole, choose your yarn and needles. Play around with what you like on paper then knit a swatch to test the stitch pattern and gauge. Take your measurements at bust and hip. Add as much as you would like for ease in wear and make notes. Now, satisfied with your stitch pattern and having calculated the number of stitches needed (using your gauge of stitches per inch/cm), cast on the number and knit/crochet away. Since this is meant to be a fun, handmade project, don't be scared of being "correct". What you should be doing is exploring your own preferences for color and style. Use some yarn you already have, even raffia if you so wish. A crochet top in simple mesh looks fresh and sweet. Shells or beads can be worked in or sew on later. If you make this a fairly loose camisole, say something to wear around the house, then you won't go far wrong with measurements. In its most basic form, a camisole is a tube with straps, or back and front with straps. You can do that.
