Undershirt

© Esmerelda Jones

Based on a garment in the Museum of the City of London.

" This undershirt, or waistcoat, is patterned after a child's knitted shirt in the Museum of London. The original is an earth-brown, and has no surviving ties. It was knitted in the round. Shirts such as this were probably worn over a linen shirt, but under the doublet or cassock. While we have used this pattern to make a man's garment, waistcoats of this sort may have been worn by women as well.

Instructions: (size 40)

Materials:

6 skeins fingering yarn (4ply) 1 set No. 4 (3.50mm) double-pointed sock needles 1 No. 4 (3.50mm) circular needle 24" (60cm)long 1 No. 7 (4.50mm) crochet hook

Gauge:

7 stitches = 1"

Note: Before beginning, measure off and set aside 28-30 yards of yarn to use in finishing, since the instructions will use up all or almost all of the six skeins.

Cast on 100 sts on double pointed needles (33-34-33). Knit around for 6". Knit to end of second needle (34) turn and purl back 34 sts. Continue knitting and purling on these 34 sts an additional 5" to make the saddle over the shoulder. Cast off the 34 sts and put the remaining 66 stitches on a holding needle. Knit a second sleeve as above.

Knit to the next marker, slip marker, K1, slip 1, PSSO.* Knit to within 3 sts of the next marker and repeat the 2 decreases as above (*). Knit to end of row. Next row - purl. Repeat these two rows 24 times, or until there are 264 sts remaining (33sts to marker #1, 66 sts to marker #2, 66 sts to marker #3, 66 sts to marker #4 and 33 sts to end of row). Remove marker and knit one row, purl one row without decreasing until the front opening measures 10" ending with a knit row. Join the work at this point and knit round and round an addition 13".
