Grocery Shopping in the Future

Impulse items, or alternate brands will be scanned as you put them in the cart and a new inventory will be created. Nothing will be able to be put in the cart without being scanned as you will be using a magnetic scanning device instead of the normal laser units we are so familiar with now.

The trip will continue through the checkout, which will only involve the cashier scanning your memory card for current purchases and simultaneously debiting your bank account of the corresponding funds. There will be a running total on a digital display in the handle of the cart so there will be no surprises at checkout time.

When you arrive home, the items will be put away as usual. You will slip the memory card into your PDA and then link up with your whole home computer to restock your inventory and prepare it for your next shopping excursion.

A premium service will be available for those who don’t have time to shop or, because of physical limitations, are not able to go out for themselves.

Here are some links that you might find interesting. Not much to do with the future but lots to do with the past.
