Once you have found the cabinets that suit your image of what you want your kitchen to be, the next step is to provide the designer with specific dimensions of your kitchen.
Since you are doing this yourself, don't expect the box store to send out someone to measure it for you. The measurements are your responsibility, not theirs. Be precise and give the designer all the details required. If there is a mistake, it's your mistake not the designer's. Above all, be flexible in your design. What you want and what you can get are very frequently two different things. Don't get stuck on one design concept. Listen to the designer and formulate different ideas with him or her. Once you get all the cupboards drawn in the computer, take a floorplan home and see if the design fits in your room. Using masking tape, lay the new design out on your floor. Check the distances between things and make sure the aisles are wide enough. Check things like heights and opening of cupboards. Check that the various doors open without hitting other things and that drawers seem to be where they should be. Dishwashers are a concern frequently when their doors open and trip unwitting users. Make sure there is enough room for things like this. Ok, so the design is finished and you have the quote in your hand. Be sure to ask what the installed cost would be and keep that in mind when you are considering doing it yourself. With installation provided by the box store, you have no worries. If you install it yourself, every error is yours and yours alone. Go home and have a glass of wine. Mull over your options.
