Kitchen Design - Where to Start

© Brian Mahoney

If you take a look around the busiest room in your home, you might find that your kitchen is in need of a small, medium or mega-total-huge renovation. Even if you have just moved into a brand new house, chances are that there are some things that need to be changed.

In the months following this, I will help you unravel the mystery of how to renovate your kitchen and transform it into something that fits you and your lifestyle. It will prove to be fun and educational at the same time, I hope. Projects that seem overwhelming can, with some help, actually become exciting and incredibly rewarding. Get your pen a pad of paper out, and let's get started right away.

The theory of kitchen design doesn't come out of a steaming cauldron. The National Kitchen and Bath Association have created standards for kitchen design. Before starting your project, it might be worthwhile to take a glance at their site and decide which of their guidelines are suitable for your new kitchen. Check out their site here : http://www.nkba.com/siteataglance.html and you will find it full of useful information. But don't get lost and forget to come back here! In successive months I will explain some of the NKBA's theories for you.

After visiting the NKBA site, head down to the local magazine store and pick up an armful of kitchen design mags. Don't forget to pay for them now! Head home, put your feet up and dream a bit of how the other half lives. If you are the other half already, congratulate yourself and keep looking for tips.

Now, for the final movement in this sonata, drop the books, forget the mess on the counter, perhaps pour yourself a glass of wine and stand in your present kitchen. You could even sit on the counter if you want. Squint your eyes and pretend that what you saw in the mag, is what's in your kitchen. The granite or the Corian counter top, the fine ceramic tiles and the beautiful new cherry cupboards. Fill in your own styles and preferences here and come back to reality.

Renovating a kitchen is confusing, tedious and stressful. Living with a renovated kitchen after it is all done, is pleasant, fulfilling and extremely rewarding. If you can look forward to the latter and live through the former, you will be able to complete the job. We'll work together on this,
