W.I.T.C.H. The Disappearance

In my July, 2004 article titled, "W.I.T.C.H. The Power of Five," I introduced you to the W.I.T.C.H. series of books about five friends Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia, and Hay Lin. These five friends discover they have special powers of air, water, fire, earth and the Heart of Candracar. They are the five chosen ones brought together not by coincidence, but on purpose, to be Guardians of the Veil. There are twelve portals to the evil world of Metamoor and it is the duty of these Guardians to seal off each one.

After reading book one, I was eager to speed through book two, W.I.T.C.H. The Disappearance. This book virtually picks up where the first book ended. Now that the girls know they have special powers, they have to figure out how to use them. There are some hilarious misuses of their magic that involve turning pesky boys into...well you'll have to read the book to find out!

The W.I.T.C.H. girls were able to escape an icky monster by the name of Vathek in their first adventure and close off the first portal. In this second adventure, the girls have to deal with more emotional issues, such as the death of a loved one, the disappearance of a friend, and the nervousness of talking to boys.

The girls stumble upon the location of the second portal to Metamoor. They must find a way to close it before Vathek comes to haunt them again. The girls learn the power of their individual strengths, but realize in order to succeed, they must come together as one. The Heart of Candracar unifies their powers.

The format of the book is the same as book one. Each chapter tells us the story through a different character's point of view. The ending is once again action-packed, with mysterious footprints and walls that build upon themselves.
