A Review of “Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief”

What would you do if you caught somebody sneaking around your room rummaging through your desk and drawers? What if they stole your watch or favorite video game or even your wallet? You could run to tell your parents and the police and they could help. But what if the thief in your room knew that YOU saw them?

That's just what happened to Sammy Keyes. She spied someone across the street stealing a wallet. The thief saw her. She wanted to tell the police, but didn't for three reasons. One, she was using binoculars that she wasn't supposed to play with. Two, she was living in her Grandma's apartment building where she wasn't supposed to live. Three, she could have told the police, but the police wouldn't believe her anyway. So what was she to do? Solve the case herself!

Sammy and her best friend Marissa search for clues. Sammy dares to sneak into the scene of the crime, the Heavenly Hotel, even when her grandmother forbids her from ever stepping foot in the seedy joint. Sammy has no fear. She finds clues along the way that point to possible suspects and the suspense of the story keep the reader interested.

Sammy also has to deal with Mrs. Graybill, her grandmother's next-door neighbor, who doesn't want Sammy to live in the building with her grandmother. Mrs. Graybill is like the Hall Monitor at school. She keeps an eye on the traffic in the hall and Sammy doesn't have a hall pass.

Wouldn't you know it; there is also a school bully by the name of Heather that Sammy has to contend with everyday at school. Heather's tricks are low down and dirty. To get even, Sammy pulls humorous pranks on Heather.

So the next time you're at the book store, pick of a copy of "Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief" by Wendelin Van Draanen. In no time flat, you'll be hooked on the series and love following Sammy through her various adventures!
