The yeti, or abominable snowman as he is sometimes called, is supposed to live in the Himalaya Mountains, the highest range on earth. The Himalayas lie on the border between India, Nepal, and Tibet (now part of China). Few outsiders ever go to these places, and large areas around these rough valleys and peaks are uninhabited. Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is part of the Himalayan Range.
The yeti was first reported by an Englishman, B.H. Hodson, in 1832. He described a hairy creature that reportedly had attacked his servants. This was the first, but not the last, report of yeti made by someone from outside the region. The second came in 1889, when British army major L. A. Waddell found what he took to be large footprints in the snow on a high peak.
The yeti seems to be similar to Bigfoot and Sasquatch of the United States and Canada. All of these creatures are said to avoid humans. All are described as very large, apelike, hairy, and very bad smelling. They have facial features similar to a human being and they communicate by grunts, cries, or whistles. Most authorities think, if the yeti exists at all, it is actually a bear or large primate (ape). Create a friendlier snowman you can wear as a necklace or hang on your Christmas tree.
