Kids, remember I told you that Merrideth Cheroweth would be joining us at Kids' Korner in February with her topic, Fun Projects for Kids? Well, Merrideth has sent me this fun activity. Enjoy!

Difficulty Level: Medium

Everyone loves ice cream! There are so many flavors and toppings available, but here is your chance to make your own unique flavor of ice cream!

Supplies:

• 1 cup milk

• 1 TBSP (tablespoon) Sugar

• ½ tsp vanilla

• 6 Tbsp Rock salt

• 1 pint-sized Ziploc baggie

• 1 gallon-sized Ziploc baggie

• Pillow case

Directions:

1. Fill the pint-sized baggie with the milk, sugar, and vanilla then seal it shut.

2. Fill the gallon-sized baggie half full with ice, add the salt.

3. Put the small bag(s) inside the big bag with ice and salt. Make sure the small bags are surrounded by the ice. Carefully seal the big bag.

4. Place the doubled bag inside the pillowcase. Have a partner hold the end of the Pillow case closed, and hold the other end closed yourself. Then shake back and forth, up and down.

5. Shake gently. After a few minutes, check to see if your ice creams is starting to freeze. If it is, it's time to shake hard and fast - this will help incorporate the air to make your ice cream light and fluffy. If you freeze your ice cream quickly with lots of shaking it will have smaller ice crystals in it. Bigger ice crystals make a gritty ice cream.

6. Keep shaking the bag without stopping for about five minutes. Check it. If it's not frozen, shake some more.

7. When it is frozen enough, take the small bags out and rinse them off carefully, you don't want salt in your ice cream! Open the bags and eat.

Once you've mastered the art of ice cream making, there are some other frozen treats you can make using this same technique! To make frozen yogurt use less milk, and add yogurt; for sherbet add fruit that has been processed in the blender; for sorbet, blended fruit without the milk.
