Resolutions for the New Year

© Deanna Couras Goodson

The New Year was just a few weeks ago. I am sure you heard lots of people talking about New Year's Resolutions. But, what exactly is a New Year's Resolution? And, why do we make them?

When we finish up the old year, our hearts and minds turn towards the new. There are a lot of traditions that have been used all over the world since the beginning of time that celebrate the change-over from the old to the new year.

One of the biggest (and most popular) traditions is to make a resolution. A resolution is a promise. It's a promise you make to yourself to do things better, or to live healthier.

Many people, like me, made a resolution this year to lose weight. Losing weight is very difficult. But, it's important to lose weight for many health reasons. If you are overweight, you are at risk for health conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

You also have less mobility. Mobility is the ability to move around. It can be harder to walk, run and do many other things when you're overweight.

Many people, though, think that overweight people are just lazy and they could lose weight if they wanted to. Over the next few months, as I work on losing my weight, I'm going to talk to y'all here at Kids' Health about the process and show you first-hand that it's not easy and it's about more than just wanting to do it. You really have to work at it.

I'm going to do lots of things to lose weight. Here's a checklist of some of them:

  • drink more water
  • cut soda (even "Diet" soda) and SUGAR out of my life
  • write down what I eat every day
  • chew my food slowly
  • eat less
  • and exercise more.
  • Of course, it's not even as simple as this. But, I'm going to work on getting me healthy. It's time to feel better.

    **So, what are your resolutions?
**How will you make sure you keep your promises to yourself this year?

Let's talk about our resolutions in the Discussion area. I'd love to hear from you.
