Halloween Safety How-Tos For You

Hi! I'm Polly - the Pumpkin Policewoman. Halloween is my favorite time of the year. Is it yours? I love scary movies. I think it's great fun to dress up in a costume. My family and I decorate our house with lots of great stuff.

Oh yeah, and, as my good friend Timmy would say, you get to eat lots of candy, too!

Trick-or-treating rocks.

I admit that trick-or-treating sure is fun. Eating candy, well, that's a lot of fun, too. Of course, you have to try and watch what you do so you can stay safe and healthy, okay?

Here are a few tips for you to be safe and healthy this (and every) Halloween.

Safety Tips:

  • Carry something that lights up while you are trick-or-treating. There's a lot of cool Halloween-type flashlights. Timmy has a mummy head. It's awesome.
  • Don't wear a flammable costume. Flammable is a big word that's used for something that can catch on fire. Ask your mom or dad to check out your costume before you buy it!
  • Go out to trick-or-treat with at least one adult. Timmy and his family go in a group and well, it's even more fun, too!
  • Stick to familiar neighborhoods when trick-or-treating. Great places to visit include your neighborhood, the houses by your school and/or your church. Staying close to home is always safer and well, you may just meet a few friends along the way. That's always fun, right?
  • Obey all traffic laws. Check for stop signs and walk in the cross-walk to avoid accidents.
  • Make sure that an adult checks your candy before you eat it. Ask them to be on the lookout for broken wrappers and anything that doesn't look quite right. Sometimes, the police or local hospitals will 'x-ray' your candy, too! Now, that's cool.
  • Of course, don't forget to enjoy your treats. Try not to overdo them. You could get an upset tummy or a toothache. Brushing afterward is always best.

So, if you follow these safe and healthy Halloween How-tos, I guarantee you will have a fun and fantastic holiday!
