Decorate the Garden

If you and your kids have gotten the garden planted for the season, but the plants are still small and not doing much yet, it's time to decorate the garden. A few well-placed ornaments can add character and pizzazz to an otherwise lack-luster garden season (such as spring in a garden of annual flowers). There is nothing like some fun garden ornaments to add humor and fun to your garden year 'round! Plus the kids will love participating in this!

Start by browsing books, catalogs, or store aisles for ideas. What kind of ornaments are you looking for? Something elegant and formal? Homey with country-style? Perhaps something reminiscent of childhood? Something colorful with movement for the kids? There is a lot to choose from, but don't get out your checkbook yet! Just look and think.

Once you have decided on the type of items you are interested in, think about the possibility of making them with your kids first. If you are interested in scarecrows, look around the house and yard to see what materials you might have on hand. Maybe you want stepping stones with homemade flair and can find neat things to embed in them. If you are interested in mosaics, look to see if you have old pots, a table, a birdbath, or other items to apply tiles to. And there are many more projects on the web if you search for them at your favorite search engine.

While you are exploring the world of garden ornamentation, but certain to look around at what exists in your neighborhood or other places. If you see anything that would be a good contribution to Suite101.com's Annual Tacky Yard Art Contest, be sure to get a photo and send it in to her! You could win a garden book or other garden-related prizes. She has two categories this year. The first is "Really Tacky Stuff" and the second is "Weird, But Wonderful". Be sure to visit the contest to view the entries. The contest starts June 1st and continues until September 15th. It is always a lot of fun, so be sure to participate. Don't leave home without your camera! You never know when you will come upon the perfect tacky situation that could win the contest! To get you thinking about tacky stuff, check out this thread at Gardenweb.com's Accoutrements Forum. I started this thread over a year ago, and it's still going strong! There's a lot of tacky stuff out there to add though!
