Gifts for Young Gardeners

  • Chia pets - While often scoffed at by gardeners, these can be a great beginners project for young children. Kids get to enjoy the "cute" object and grow vegetation on it all at the same time.

  • Books and Magazines - There are many books available for all types and ages of gardeners. Older children may do well with an adult garden book on a topic area of interest such as "Botany for Gardeners" or a book on perennials or whatever is their niche. For young gardeners, you can check Barnes and Noble's list of Children's Gardening books. The number of books available is amazing! You can even order them online.

  • Terrarium Kits or Dish Gardens - One of my earliest garden experiences was with making and maintaining a terrarium. If you are unable to find a kit, you can always make one up with a book about terrariums, a large glass container, dish, or aquarium (if it leaks, it's no problem, so dig out the old fish tank and spruce it up a bit), small plants that survive in low light and grow slowly (your book will give you ideas for this), and perhaps some small rocks for paths or tiny ceramic animals. These could also be considered a small "fairy garden" with a few accessories from the doll house section at the craft store.

  • Potted House Plants or Cactus - A house plant or cactus can open up the world of plants and gardens for children and gives them the responsibility to care for and maintain it as well. Books on caring for house plants or cactus could be included with the gift.

  • Plant Divisions - If you are in a warm climate, then giving plant divisions of your perennials could be something that will encourage the child to get outside and dig. You might include something on how to grow these flowers and give suggestions on where to plant them as well. Even better, you could help the child prepare the soil for planting.

  • Flower Press or Flower Drying Supplies - A flower press and a book on decorating with pressed flowers and even seeds for flowers that press well could be a nice gift. Also a book on drying flowers along with the supplies needed could start a new hobby for the child. Growing in the summer and making things out of dried or pressed flowers for the winter months.

  • Garden Accessories -
