Cats in Kids' Gardens

Sep 22, 2003 - © Dustytoo, Siamese Cat

Dustytoo, Biogardener's Siamese cat, teaches children how cats can benefit a garden and how we can make sure that cats are happy in our garden.

A Note from the Biogardener

Let me introduce my assistant writer to you. His name is Dustytoo, and he was named in honor of Dusty the Garden Cat who used to assist our Biogardener in writing articles for her Natural Health topic at Suite101.

Dustytoo knows more about felines than you and I ever will, so he is going to talk to us about cats in kids' gardens today. Feline is another word for "cat."

This is a good time of the year to talk about animals, because October 4 is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. He is the Italian Saint who loved animals so much that he devoted his life preaching to them about God's peace and love. I have linked some other articles about him at the bottom for you and your parents to enjoy.

In honor of St. Francis, people in Winnipeg bring their pets to church to get a blessing. Maybe they do that in your town, too. You might ask around to find out.

If you hold the mouse over a picture, you can read the description.

Here's Dustytoo

My name is Dustytoo, and I have lived with many people over the centuries, but this is the first time that I live in a house with a beautiful large garden paradise. I take care of that garden by keeping the mice away. I don't like mice, because they eat our vegetables, and they try to get into the house when it gets cold outside. I also keep the starlings and crows away. I don't like those birds either, because they eat baby songbirds.

Cats' Paradise

All the cats in the neighborhood help me with my job, because my Biogardener is the only lady around here who loves cats, and we love her in return. We never do anything to annoy her. We only annoy people who don't like us. That is the way cats are.

Our Biogardener makes the garden comfortable for us by allowing lots of catnip plants to grow all over the place, especially around the borders. That attracts the other cats and it keeps all of us happy. We call this garden "Cat's Paradise."

Catnip is very soothing. If your mom has a hard time falling asleep some day, tell her to make herself some catnip tea. She won't need to dry the herb first but can use it fresh. That is what my Biogardener does, and I love it when she makes the tea, because the whole house smells like cat heaven.
