You can easily make a useful Valentine's present for your mom. A planter for the kitchen filled with garlic shoots to use fresh in salads.

Valentine or Any Time

Of course, you can make a card or another Valentine craft for your mom, and I am linking an article at the bottom which will help you make beautiful Valentine goodies out of the throw-away styrofoam trays on which your mom buys her meat of bakery goods. Today I am going to tell you how you can make a planter for your mom's kitchen which she will surely appreciate because she can use it for salads and cooking. It it really easy to make.

Garlic Planter

Find a nice flower pot or planter. I am sure your mom has some nice ones around which are empty. If the pot is not that pretty to look at, you can paint it with left-over house paint, or you could set it in a larger pot to cover the ugly outside. You will need some light potting soil to fill the pot. Your mom probably has some around. If she does not, you would be able to buy it now in grocery, in hardware, and in department stores. When you go to the grocery store with your mom, look at the garlic bulbs. Find one or two which have little green shoots showing under the white covering. The larger the shoots, the better. When you get home, separate the cloves of garlic from the bulb without removing the white shells. The place where they stick together is where the roots will grow. Stick each clove into the soil with the tip showing. You can stick them as closely together as you like without them touching each other. Now water the pot. First the roots will grow and then the shoots will get bigger. When they get large enough, your mom can cut them off with scissors to use in salads. It is so nice to have fresh herbs in the winter. They are terribly expensive in the grocery store, and they are so easy to grow.

Happy Valentine's Day

Now wish your mom a happy Valentine's Day from me.
