Yule Time Fun

This is one of my favorite times of the year. Here are some great ways to celebrate this time with your family.

CRAFTS-

Want to make your Christmas Tree one of a kind? Make your own decorations. Get some cardboard that you can cut into shapes. Cut it into bells, stars, candles, candy canes, trees, and wreaths. Decorate with paint, crayons, markers, glitter, sequins, ribbon, buttons, felt, yarn, or anything else you can find! I discovered that if you are going to use paint, you'll want cardboard that is heavier than a cereal box, otherwise the cereal box worked fine.

Don't have snow yet? Let's make some snowballs. Take a styrofoam ball and place it on a cup to prevent it from rolling while you work on it. Paint the surface that is showing with thinned glue. Then put white and blue tissue paper squares into the glue. Sprinkle glitter sparingly. Turn ball over and complete the other side. It works as a great tree ornament or table decoration if you place several in a bowl.

Hate to buy wrapping paper? Make your own. Get a roll of butcher paper (the paint paper at Home Depot also works but it is hard to tape up). Have the kids make sponge cut-outs of stars, trees, etc. As a tip, do not use glitter (unless you like to vaccum constantly).

Here's a great (and cheap) present idea for the grandparents. On a white hand towel, use red and green fabric paint and do the kids hand prints. Write with fabric paint, "See, I DID wash my hands." We did this last year and they turned out great!

With spare cardboard, cut out candy cane shapes. Give the kids red and white pom poms. Let the kids glue them on by switching the red and white poms.

Kids wanting a tree up in their room? I've got the perfect solution! Cut out a tree mural to hang up on the wall. Let the kids paint it, and decorate. We used painted macaroni, fruit loops, popcorn, and cheerios as ornaments.

How about a sandpaper gingerbread ornament? Cut out two man shapes the same size out of sandpaper. Glue the two men together so the rough side is out. Scrape a cinnamon stick over sandpaper to make it smell. Give the man a face and other features. We glued on felt features. You can try small candies, felt shapes, rick-rack, and white paint to make it look like frosting.
