Learning about Frogs

What do you know about frogs? Even if the thought of touching one gives you the creeps, your kids will love learning about this fascinating creature. Talk to your kids about frogs and where you would find them and what you think they eat. Explore the reccommended websites with your kids and talk about what you see. There is even a website where you can order tadpoles for a reasonable price so the kids can learn about their different stages of development. With all of the activities, let your child do as much as they are capable, then they won't mind so much when you have to help them.

CRAFTS

Jumping Frogs- Trace frog pattern on paper. Have kids decorate it. Then fold in half and poke a hole in it. Put string through the hole and knot it. Have the kids jump their frog around.

Lilypads- Give kids a large piece of green construction paper and let them cut out their own lilypads.

Stuffed Frogs- Cut 2 frog shapes from construction paper. Let kids draw features for the frog. Staple the frogs together around the sides leaving an opening. Let kids stuff their frogs with cotton balls and then staple closed.

Paperbag Frogs- Have the kids paint a small lunch paper bag green. Then let the kids either glue on facial features or paint them on. Now they have a frog puppet.

Cork Frogs- Take corks and color them green with a crayon. Then take a green pipe cleaner and wrap it around the cork, twisting and bending along the ends to be legs. Tie a string to the pipe cleaner to pull the floatable frog through the water.

GAMES

Leap Frog- Make sure to play with shoes off. The kids really enjoy trying to jump over adult backs.

Lilypad Jumping- Cut out some lilypad shapes from green poster paper. Place them around the room and have kids jump around from lilypad to lilypad.

Parachute Play- Blow up a green balloon and draw a frog face on it. Take a small sheet or child's blanket to use as a parachute. Place balloon on top of chute and tell kids the chute is the lilypad and the ground is the water. As the lilypad waves around, try to keep the frog on the lilypad and out of the water.
