One of the simplest and most creative craft items is paper. It is amazing to see some of the neat craft ideas available that uses paper as its primary material. To review how the Chinese culture invented paper and receive a basic understanding of the papermaking process, try this site: http://www.freeyellow.com:8080/members4/...

Once you see how it is made, try making your own, check out this site, they have the most detailed explanations and include good illustrations and pictures of the process step by step. There are other sites available but this one is geared for kids and adults alike: http://www.learn2.com/06/0697/0697.html Or try this all in one site, with the history, professional manufacturing, and at home method of papermaking http://www.pg.com/schldays/paper/33001.h... Finally, if these don't work for you, try this Handmade Paper Making page http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Point...

Once you have the paper made, think of the various things you could do with it. See if you could use the paper for origami. These two projects are the easiest for a beginner and also brought to you by Learn2.com: http://www.learn2.com/08/0855/0855.html Or, for the history of origami and some neat diagrams to follow try http://www.paperfolding.com/ This site has a lot of information so it is best viewed with parents close by. If you hunt for other sites, remember that the illustrations are often called diagrams or models; this site has the most comprehensive list I've found so far: http://www.origami.vancouver.bc.ca/cgi-b... It would also be good, if you are a beginner, to review some of the basic terms and folds, try here: http://www.empnet.com/woodmansee/origuid...

Of course origami is not the only type of paperfolding available. For a neat change try this site that demonstrates the art of one piece paper sculptures: http://www.tiac.net/users/gneils/gupit-g... This craft is requires supervision because scissors are involved.

Still looking for something different? Try parchment crafting. Try this site for a simple explanation http://www.dandeeservices.com/Pergamano.... Its technical name is Pergamano. If you search the net, use pergamano for more accurate hits. Interested in trying this craft and need a free pattern, try this one http://www.papershops.com/myps/mygift2u.... thanks to Evelyn Ying. Or, Kathryn has two bookmark patterns to try http://kathryn.fsn.net/book1.html This craft really is for older kids.
