First Aid Basics: Part Three

What happens if the bleeding continues and will not stop?

1.DO NOT REMOVE THE ORIGINAL DRESSING AND BANDAGE. Apply another dressing where the original is and apply pressure. Then apply another bandage to keep that one in place. Continue until the EMS arrives or the victim arrives at the hospital.

2.Apply pressure on the nearest artery. This will help to decrease the blood flow.

Toothless Wonder

What happens to knocked out teeth? More than what most people may think. It used to be that dentists could not save that knocked out pearly white, but now there is hope to all kids and adults out there. The whole trick to replanting a tooth is to do it as soon as possible from the time of the accident and to care for the tooth properly.

If you could imagine your mouth a vegetable garden and your teeth the plants growing abundantly, then you can understand the idea and practice of replanting teeth. Replanting a tooth is just like taking a new little vegetable plant into the rich soil. The tooth has many little root fibers that connect to the jawbone to keep the teeth in place and healthy. The fibers continue on into the tooth and are there to nourish the tooth with blood and also contain the nerves that go from the tooth to the jawbone.

So how do you care for the knocked out tooth and how long do you have to get it replanted? Carefully handle the tooth from the crown... the edge that is seen by all of us when the mouth is open. Make sure not to touch the root area at all and if you can put the tooth back into the person's socket from where the tooth was knocked out of... your chances are even better. Make sure to put the tooth back into the socket the way it was before it was knocked out however. To keep it in place, you can use a gauze pad or clean cloth to hold it in place. If you are unable to put the tooth into the socket due to pain or any other reason... the you can put the tooth into a container full or cold milk or water if milk is not available immediately.

Now, how long do you have to get to the doctor? It is imperative that you get to a dentist as soon as possible... preferable within
