(Note: The Internet is a dynamic place and web sites can come and
go quite quickly. This is one of my older and some of the links may not
work anymore. If you find that this is the case I invite you to look at
some of my more recent articles. My links section has my
favorite links from past articles and is checked regularly for non
working links. Wayne)
Originally I was going to write about dogs but yesterday morning I was listening to the CBC Radio program Basic Black. There was a man on the show who raised and collected tarantulas. I started cruising the web and was astounded by how much great insect stuff I found. So the doggies went out the windows to sate my taste for bugs. Don't worry about the dogs though, I've already got my research done so I'm sure they'll pop up sometimes soon. Now, on to the bugs. One of the really great resources is the Entomology Index of Internet Resources at Iowa State. You want to find Internet resources about Entomology (the study of insects) this is the place to go. This site contains many different subsections including lists of image links (bug pictures). The area that will probably be of most interest to kids is K-12 Educator recommended resources. A couple of my favorites include Praying Mantis Central, a website devoted to the Praying Mantis insect. Read the authors story of how she became involved in the keeping praying mantis. This site also includes a list of links to other mantis sites. B-EYE The world through the eyes of a bee is written by a researcher in bee vision and includes images he uses to test bee vision. See from a bee's point of view. If you have a scanner and a budding scientist on your hands Digital Dragonflies might be for you. This site explains how to make images of dragonflies using an everyday colour scanner. If you don't have a scanner then you can still take a look at the images. The Yuckiest Site on the Internet is a little more tongue in cheek but still has interesting bug stuff. The last site for this article is the internet ant farm at Atomic.com. This site provides an image of a real ant farm from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. Can be a bit disappointing if the ants aren't too active but in that case their are stored images and a huge list of ant related links. Not to be missed by any serious ant lover. Go To Page: 1 2
