Canada Day for Kids© Wayne Dawe
This week I'm going to point you towards some fun and interesting
Canadian sites as part of Suite 101's Canada celebration. I'll also
feature some Canadian-based sites from the past that you may have
missed.
CBC for kids is a web site by the Canadian public broadcaster. This site has games and activities that kids from all over the world can enjoy. Our local provincial public broadcaster TVO (TV Ontario) also has a fun web site. This URL will lead you straight to the games. If you want to learn more about Canadian geography the Mosquito game asks you trivia questions about Canadian cities to help you track down the elusive mosquito. Be sure to keep your eye on the fly swatter as you move the magnifying glass because it moves up and down depending on how close you get to the target city. Shockwave is required. NFB Kids: The Prince and I is another fun site for kids. I liked the maze which is part of the mission. If you want to learn more about Canadian geographical names Canadian Geographical Names gives you information about the origins of some of the place names of Canada. Schoolnet is a collection of educational resources created by young Canadians under contract to the government of Canada. One exhibit that may be particularly interesting to younger kids is The Canadian Currency museum. This area of Schoolnet has information about and pictures of Canadian money from earliest times to today. Schoolnet is really meant for older kids but there is enough there to interest younger ones. They might also enjoy Games of the Plains Cree. If you would like some music while you browse then visit Traditional Canadian tunes in midi format. I live in Ontario and the Ontario government has a site with pictures that represent Ontario. It's Ontario - Art Gallery has pictures of the Ontario flag, other official emblems, places of interest and historical figures of Ontario. Laura Secord was a hero of the War of 1812, a war between Canada and the United States. Two articles about her exploits can be found are mentioned below. The first article has the words to a song by Tanglefoot, a small snippet of which you heard when this page opened - if you have a java-enabled browser. You can check out the second article by clicking here. Though Mulan wasn't Canadian you shouldn't miss Terrie Bittner's wonderful article on The Real Mulan. Terrie is our women's history editor at Suite 101 and her article tells the non Disney version of the story with links to other Mulan sites on the web. Two thumbs way up. Go To Page: 1 2
