Recently one of the editors posted a notice asking if other editors would like to contribute an article to a Suite 101 Chinese New Year page. I thought it was a great idea, so here it is, my salute to the Chinese New Year. be sure to visit the Suite 101 Chinese New Year page when your finished here to see what the other editors have been up to.

Legend of the Chinese new year gives a quick summary of some of the possible origins of the Chinese New Year celebration. Family.com, part of the Disney empire, also has a feature article on the festival with some fun activities to try. Another general-purpose New Years site is Happy Chinese New Year! at Chinascape. Not as much fun, but lots of information on the Chinese New year.

Now I'm going to take a little bit of a detour and give some sites that deal with Chinese themes and cultures. I don't know about you but I have always been interested in the abacus and when researching this article I came across The Abacus. This page explains how an abacus is used and includes a java applet so that you can try out your new skills. Art of China Homepage has samples of Chinese art, the Zodiac, some Chinese music and language and links to other sites with information on China. I found that it loaded really slowly but the graphics are worth the wait. The Art of China Homepage is part of the Multiculteral Homepage project at Purdue University. This site is a collection of student-created pages that explain about the home country of the student.

If you'd like to try your hand at some Chinese cooking, Dole Pineapple has a recipe in their Kid's Fun Cookbook for Chinese vegetable stir fry.

This year is the year of the tiger so I thought I'd throw in one site about tigers. Tiger Information Center is a site dedicated to preserving the five subspecies of tigers. Tiger pictures, tiger sounds and tiger facts - this is the place to learn more about tigers and have some fun too.

I hope these sites have helped show you a little more about Chinese culture and history and the festival of the Chinese New year. If you have any comments or suggestions please send me some mail, just click on my name at the bottom of the page and don't forget to drop by
