Winter Olympics

Jan 13, 1998 - © Wayne Dawe

We are in the depths of winter this week and that fact, along with the large number of figure skating specials that have been on TV this week, have turned my thoughts towards the winter Olympics.

Before I get to that, I'd like to preview a new feature here at Suite101: Kids on Suite 101. This page will bring together references to kid-friendly topics and links on Suite 101. I know it's a little sparse now but there are other editors at Suite 101 busily working away and they will be joining the effort over the next few weeks. Suite 101 is always looking for new editors. If you're interested in joining, just mail me for more information.

Well, now it's onto the featured sites this week. Wired Olympic Winter is the web site of the Canadian Olympic Association. This site has tons of fun things to do, including Shockwave and Java games. Another site with good Olympic themed games is CBS Sportlines Winter Olympic site. To find the games, just scroll down the page to the heading Winter Olympic Arcade games.

Britannica also has an extensive web site with winter Olympics information. No games here but lots of fascinating facts. For a general listing of Olympic sites, try Best Olympic '98 sites. Though this site doesn't list sites solely for kids, all the Olympic sites I've seen are kid-safe.

My kids really enjoy watching the Olympics on TV. Most of the events are short enough that even small children with short attention spans can see the race from beginning to end. While searching for winter Olympic sites, I didn't have much luck finding sites outside of North America. If you know of any good winter Olympic sites, please let me know. I'll keep digging around and see what I can find. Before I go I better include a pointer to the official winter Olympic site at http://www.nagano.olympic.org/. After entering the site, click on the "fun" tab at the top to go right to the fun stuff.

Late Breaking news I came across another great site after I finished this article. Don't miss U.S. Olympics CyberSchool This site features fun learning activities with an Olympic theme. When your done here be sure to drop by Winter Olympics on Suite 101 to see what the other editors at Suite 101 have been up to.
