Raccoon in the chimney© Wayne Dawe
Every so often I write a thinly veiled biographical story chronicle the
adventures of three small boys I know. To make up for missing an article
in July I decided that as a little thank you for your patience it was
time for another of the three boys stories. So without further ado I
proudly present Raccoon in the chimney.
One Sunday afternoon the three boys were sitting in their living room doing the things that boys do when they have some time on their hands. The oldest boy was watching a video on the TV, the middle boy was reading a book and the smallest boy was writing down a story. It was just starting to get dark outside when the boys heard a scratching noise that sounded like it was coming from the attic. At almost the same time they said "Oh, No, not another raccoon in the attic!". They trudged off to find the flashlight and the ladder to check the attic. When all had reassembled with the required equipment the two oldest boys went off to the bedroom while the youngest stayed in the living room. The middle boy held the ladder while the middle boy went up the ladder with the flashlight. He opened the hatch into the attic and pointed the flashlight in the general direction that the boys had heard the noise. "Do you see anything?" the youngest boy called from the living room. "Not a thing", the oldest boy yelled from the attic. "I can still hear the scratching noise", the youngest replied. "I know what it is", the middle boy said. "The noise isn't coming from the attic, it's coming from the chimney". The living room had an infrequently used fireplace with glass doors. After a little more investigation and some careful listening the boys determined that the noise was coming from an area of the fireplace bricks right beside the fireplace opening. "So what will it be, music or mothballs?" the youngest boy asked remembering their previous attempts at evicting a raccoon from their house. "Well", the oldest said, "it's getting too late to go to the store to buy mothballs. Let's try the music first and if it doesn't work then we can get some mothballs tomorrow". So the middle boy went off and got the portable stereo. They opened the fireplace doors and placed the stereo inside with the speakers pointing up. "Let's try the hard rock station, they have a special feature on Rush this weekend", the oldest boy said. They agreed that would be a better choice than the classical Go To Page: 1 2
