Hercules: Had enough of Hercules yet? I hope not© Wayne Dawe
(Note: The Internet is a dynamic place and web sites can come and
go quite quickly. This is one of my older and some of the links may not
work anymore. If you find that this is the case I invite you to look at
some of my more recent articles. My links section has my
favorite links from past articles and is checked regularly for non
working links. Wayne) Hercules is in the news again. I have three McDonalds Hercules plates up soaking in the sink and a five year old who wants to go see Hercules as his birthday present. I made the mistake of downloading the Hercules trailer from the Disney website. I ended up listening and peripherally watching it for 45 minutes on the first night as the kids played it over and over. In honour of Hercules this week we are going to look at links related to this mythical figure. The first site of interest is the Disney Hercules site. This site has pictures and text related to the movie including some games that small children will find interesting. The other recent video Hercules is the weekly syndicated series with Kevin Sorbo. I personally don't let my 7 and 5 year old watch this series but it's probably appropriate for older children. I recommend you watch it yourself and decide. The website for this Hercules is Universal Channel Hercules: The Legendary Journey. If you're interested in checking out a version of the original Hercules myth the two websites that offer reasonable versions are The Labor of Hercules from Greek Mythology on mythweb and Hercules on Mythnet. The mythweb version is probably more appropriate for small children as it glosses over some of the more sexy parts of the myth and has more pictures. It's important for parents to remember that Disney's Hercules is a cleaned up, white bread version of the myth and in the original Hercules myth the hero kills his children when Hera causes him to suffer a bout of insanity. The original story may not be suitable for small children. Hercules has also given his name to one of the constellations in the night sky. Two pages that give information on this aspect of Hercules are Constella tion Hercules and Hercules. The final aspect of Hercules that I'm going to investigate is the C-
130 Hercules transport plane. A photo of the plane which is built by
Lockheed Marietta can be found here and a description of it's uses
