Beach Games: Something to do when your bored at the beach© Wayne Dawe
(Note: The Internet is a dynamic place and web sites can come and
go quite quickly. This is one of my older and some of the links may not
work anymore. If you find that this is the case I invite you to look at
some of my more recent articles. My links section has my
favorite links from past articles and is checked regularly for non
working links. Wayne) As requested by my esteemed readers, or at least one of them, this week I'm focusing on games to play at the beach. These are games that are meant for those times when it's raining, or in that time between supper and when the kids go off to bed and they need something to help them unwind. Two items I have picked up in my travels are The Big Family Games Book. This is a large format book with board pages (like baby books) that contains both the game board and the rules for six classic games: snakes and ladders, Parcheesi, checkers, solitaire, fox and geese and nine men morris. It was originally published by Michael O'Mara Books in London England with a list price of $19.99. The ISBN is 1-479-708-5. All required accessories are included. Another large format board game is Jumbo Games with Jumbo Checkers. This is a large checkers board woven in a rug. The rug is about 28 X 28 inches. An added bonus is that the back side of the rug has 3 X 3 and 4 X 4 Tic Tac Toe boards. The board and pieces are so big that you can take it with you down to the beach. I bought mine into a Cracker Barrel restaurant (those who live in the U.S. know about Cracker Barrel). It's made by a company in Fayetteville Georgia called Ventura Inc. Now to get around the Barbara Martin's request for sites with games
rules - yes, they exist and here are a few for your perusal. The Game Room has pointers to board game and card games of all types. The Game Cabinet is a monthly electronic magazine that focuses on board and strategy games with articles and editorial as opposed to just links to other sites. D'Antiques Game rules has rules for some older games that aren't available anymore but for which you might have an old board that you're aching to use. One site that particularly interested me was Rules of Card Games - Alphabetical Index. It reminded me of when I was in high school and we used to play Euchre during our lunch hour. Euchre is a card game that's slightly similar to bridge but simpler to play and learn. Card games are great because they are games that work quite well in the car while traveling to your weekend getaway. Another site to investigate is
