Place on the Web well worth a visit: Miscellaneous links© Wayne Dawe
(Note: The Internet is a dynamic place and web sites can come and
go quite quickly. This is one of my older and some of the links may not
work anymore. If you find that this is the case I invite you to look at
some of my more recent articles. My links section has my
favorite links from past articles and is checked regularly for non
working links. Wayne)
Occasionally people send me e-mail with links they think might be of interest and this week I'm going to tell you about some of the more interesting ones I've heard about and visited. One site that really blew my socks off was The Prince and I. This web site is a fun, educational site designed by the National Film Board of Canada to help kids develop their reading skills. The NFB is well known for their animated features some of which I have mentioned here before and, as could be expected from Oscar-award-winning animators, I found this site to be visually stunning. This site is geared to young kids between the ages of 6 and 10. There are no registration or user fees but Java or Shockwave are required for best viewing. Another site is WebTopics. WebTopics are collections of web site reviews, each centered around a theme. Two areas of particular interest to children are the science and kids' areas. Some favorite topics are "Pets" and "Tour the World." in the kids area and "Egyptian Archaeology" and "Disease" in the science area. WebTopics includes lists of books, CD-ROM's, videos, and other materials. Jim Cornish has spent many hours this year creating webpages that list links for primary and elementary students and teachers. These pages are to support themes covered in the curriculum of his school. Some of the topics covered include whales, sea mammals, space and sea turtles. Jim apologizes for the amateur look of some of the pages and told me that he is busy improving the look of the pages. Check them out at: www.stem net.nf.ca/Schools/Nova/CITE/themes.html I am currently running the platform preview version of Internet Explorer 4.0 and it has some features that I think will be greatly appreciated by both kids and parents. Double clicking which seem to be difficult for many kids and some adults is a thing of the past, a single click will now launch applications. Your Internet favorites are now part of the start menu if you install the feature that makes Internet Explorer your desktop shell. Smart favorites is a feature that will dial up and check URL's to see if they have been updated Go To Page: 1 2
