Art Galleries: Lots and Lots of Art

Last week when I was at the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, I realized I haven't done an article on art yet. So here it is. Unfortunately, the Rijks Museum doesn't have a Web site but there are many other art galleries around the world with Web sites. One place to start is Art Museum Network. This site has links to hundreds of North American galleries. The only niggling point I have is that it's a bit confusing to navigate. I'm not really a fan of the way this site opens the museum sites in a frame in the centre of the screen; by the time you take into account the small part Suite 101 takes up at the top and the two wide bands at the top and bottom of the frame, it leaves too little space left to appreciate the art. Otherwise I still recommended this site. If you would like some place a little less centered on North America, try Jednet Art Center. This site lists art museums worldwide and includes links to sites that are not necessarily traditional galleries.

You may have noticed that neither of these sites are specifically geared to children. I think the Internet is a great way to introduce children to art. Most galleries hang pictures too high for small children, frown on too much talking or running and require quite a bit of walking to get around. Most art can be quite accessible to children and kids know what they like just as well as adults do (and usually with a lot less pretension).

It's difficult to recommend art galleries to people because art is such a personal thing but a few of the places I found entertaining are The Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery. Thomson was a Canadian landscape painter who belonged to a group of artists called the "Group of Seven". One of the major world galleries is The Louvre in Paris which is the home of the Mona Lisa.
